Also minor and easy to do improvements can add a lot to the authenticity of a model or a diorama. Not only seat suspension of motorcycles or gunner seats, but also every kind of spring antenna mount or spring loaded weapons recoil systems or similar items can be improved by this slight conversion:
If there is another shape of the spring to be formed, just model the master form from a plastic sprue or maybe from two compound putty and twist the wire around it.
By changing the diameter of master form and/or the wire, one can produce a wide variety of springs. After twisting the wire around the master, push the windings together or stretch them, just to achieve the desired effect and then pull the wire down from the master. The ends can be directly inserted into the model or be accomodated bs some other scratch build mounts. For this purpose I often use the punch and die set.
Aerials like those made from the
flexible tubes can for instance be put directly onto the one end of our spring.
