The military museum is situated on the hill "Kalemegdan", at the southernmost point of the Belgrad fortress.
The exhibits (40000) give an idea of the war history of the Yugoslav peoples from the ancient times up to the civil war in 1991. In the building one can see an archive with 35,000 war photos and a library with approx. 12000 specialized books. The museum was opened 1904. After the Second World War there many exhibitions about the partisan fight in Yugoslavia took place. In 1961 the museum moved into the today's building.Heavy equipment is located outside of the museum in the fortress ditch. There some rare pieces are posed, like e.g.: the Pz I F. Unfortunately these vehicles and cannons got a green color all over and are often victims of Graffitis. The military is museum of Belgrade everyone nevertheless, historically interested, recommended. |
