"Normandie ´44"

Historical background

The Tiger was the most feared German tank of the 2nd World War. But it was also vulnerable. Particularly at the drive also light weapons could reduce or knock out the mobility of this "monsters". This very scene represents a repair of a shot drive wheel with change of some track segments. At the same time the crew uses the time, in order to achieve combat readiness again. Only one "comrade" is not interested in these duties, which an NCO stops immediately. On these days considerable time pressure was with the units, since they rushed fire-brigade-like from one focus to the other.

Used models

The Tiger I

is a Tamiya model. The quality standard corresponds completely to the other well known new products of Tamiya to this type. But the price was almost exorbitant for a - governmental payed - official. The VW amphibious vehicle is an old Tamiya model, which was built without modification "out of the box".

The "Schwimmwagen"

This old kit also comes from Tamiya and had seen it´s best days years ago. Thererfore I will not mention this kit within this report! There are much better kit available nowadays.

The figures

  • Verlinden: provided the commander of the tank, the mechanics, the two refuellers and the "sluggard"
  • DES kit: is the manufacturer of the one soldier on top of the turret.
  • Tamiya: the strict NCO.
  • The firm ruin is ceramic(s). A kit, whose manufacturer I do not remember unfortunately any more. The same applies to the street surface with the tram tracks.
  • The iron gate with wall is an Italerie accessories kit.

Materials, and tinkering techniques

Tiger I: Zimmerit developed from Tamiya putty, which was laid on with a crafts knife. I imprinted the pattern with a screwdriver. Wire provided the conductions, aluminum sheet metal, aluminum and lead foil the tool mounting bases and leather belts. Parts from the spare box, stretched and deformed sprues served for the representation of accessories, antennas and wing nuts. No PE-parts were used. The Diorama developed by means of polystyrene and plaster cast, on which the ceramic(s) kits with 2-components adhesive were glued. Plaster blocks and even poured bricks served for the bridge and the debris, which were completed by means of cat litter.

Dimensions, working time and costs

the Diorama is approximately 45 cm long and 35 cm broad. I needed approx. 400 working hours and the costs for the production (without the expendables materials) amounted on approx. 120. - Euro (kits, figure costs).
